The Street Trust’s annual Alice Awards are Friday, September 27 at 5:30 PM at Castaway Portland. Tickets are available for purchase at www.thestreettrust.org.
The event will recognize Alice Award recipient Rukaiyah Adams. She is the Chief Investment Officer at Meyer Memorial Trust and Chair of the Oregon Investment Council. In addition to her professional work, Rukaiyah is shining her light on how the creation of I-5, the Memorial Coliseum, and Emanuel Hospital have impacted Portland’s black community.
Rukaiyah has presented us with the opportunity to address that history with an intentional effort to remake the Rose Quarter called the Albina Vision. The Albina Vision represents how transportation decisions ought to be made--driven by non-negotiable values and audacious hope with transportation in support of people.
Maria Sipin will receive the Emerging Leader award. She is a transportation planner at the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). In addition to her work at ODOT, Maria works for the community via several venues, and she participates in The Street Trust's Women Bike Program.
Maria is in her fifth year as a board member for the non-profit People for Mobility Justice based in Southern California and is a certified cycling trainer by the League of American Bicyclists.
Maria is active in working for the community on transportation projects and activism supporting the needs and rights of low-income communities of color, teen health, and LGBTQ youth of color.
“The Street Trust is excited to have the opportunity to recognize two amazing community members for their activism and commitment to equity. Their drive and determination are inspirational and lay the groundwork for a better tomorrow.”-Judge Kemp, Programs and Events Director at The Street Trust.
Multnomah County Commissioner Jessica Vega Pederson is the emcee for this year’s Alice Awards. The event will include a live bike performance by The Sprockettes. Leah Benson of Gladys Bikes will be the auctioneer for a limited number of unique experience-focused auction items. Beer, wine, and catering are included in the ticket price.
