Jump Start

Through the Jump Start program, we partner with school districts and communities across the state of Oregon to create a unique local bicycle and pedestrian education program by facilitating an on-site training for any teachers or community members willing to teach the program.

The Jump Start Program

For an entire school year, we assist in program development and provide access to the Jump Start equipment to one school district in Oregon. At year’s end, all partners evaluate the program and, if it is successful, find funding to purchase a fleet of bikes and a trailer for the community to continue the program in subsequent years. The Jump Start program includes an 8-hour training for teachers and community members on The Street Trust’s Safe Routes for Kids Curriculum as well as materials for the community to keep and use for one school year, including 36 bikes of all sizes, 100 helmets, tools, and a 20-foot trailer.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Oregon Department of Transportation, this program is provided free of charge.

Requirements

Communities wishing to participate in the Jump Start program must meet the following requirements:

  1. The school district is willing to let students ride bikes on- and off-campus during the school day. The Street Trust can provide a sample release form for the district to use.

  2. The school district is willing to promote the training to all PE and health teachers and identify other teachers, school staff, and/or community volunteers to be trained.

  3. The school district is willing to commit to 10 hours of instruction time for each bike safety course taught to students over 5-10 days with one or two hour lessons each day.

  4. A school district representative attends an initial planning meeting, replies to monthly email check-ins, and attends an evaluation meeting at the end of the school year.

  5. The school district signs an agreed-upon memorandum of understanding stating responsibilities. The Street Trust will provide a sample MOU.

  6. The school district or community provides a space for a one-day training for teachers and other community members in August or September.

  7. The school district or community provides a staff person to create a schedule for moving the fleet of bikes and trailer from school to school for teachers to use and provide a vehicle and driver to move the trailer.

  8. The community is willing to support the school district in which the program is implemented.

How to get started

Statewide applications for the 2020-2021 school year will open in fall 2019 and we will accept applications until January 31, 2020. We will make our selection in February.
