A bicycle and pedestrian bridge across I-84 could provide the continuous north-south route that inner Portland needs. NE 7th Avenue would provide a safe route north from the highway, and NE/SE 9th Avenue would provide a safe, low-traffic route to the south.
We predict that this corridor — connecting the Lloyd District, burgeoning inner east side industrial district, neighborhoods like Powell and Brooklyn, and newly built streetcar and light-rail stations — would quickly become one of Portland’s most heavily used and important neighborhood greenways.
STATUS Interest in a north-south neighborhood greenway for the inner-east side is growing. At the July 2015 Northeast Sunday Parkways, the BTA collected hundreds of petition signatures in support of a NE 7th / SE 9th Neighborhood Greenway. “The Green Loop,” which partially overlaps with the greenway, has been incorporated into many planning documents including the city’s Comprehensive Plan. Meanwhile, The Street Trust has joined Go Lloyd and area businesses in calling for a new bridge across Sullivan’s Gulch.
