Alice Awards 2017

Our annual Alice Awards were held on Friday, September 29. Thanks to everyone who joined us for a night of games, beer, food carts, and a festive party at our exclusive active transportation auction and celebration. Check out the videos below from the event!

Sneak peek

Whether you get there on foot, by bike, or via public transit, this year’s Alice Awards promises to be an exciting evening that you won’t want to miss. Here’s what you can expect from this year’s event:

  • A community of change-makers fighting the good fight: Each year, the Alice Awards bring together community members, active transportation advocates, and local leaders who are committed to making it safe and easy to get around. This event is your chance to catch up with friends and neighbors who, like you, are taking action to make our region the best place to bike, walk, and use public transit.
  • Food + Drinks: It wouldn’t be a party without it. Throughout the evening you’ll be provided with complimentary (and delicious) bites and a wide selection of drinks, including beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages. This year, we’re doing things a bit differently: instead of traditional table service, we’re putting together a collection of food and beverage “carts” for your enjoyment.
  • Social Hour + Raffles: Starting at 5:00 p.m., join us for a special social hour, including a chance to purchase your Golden Ticket to win a live auction package, enjoy food-truck-style food stations, and other special surprises!
  • Live Auction + Alice Awards: We’ll announce the winner of this year’s Alice Award, an acknowledgment of our gratitude for their critical work towards making our communities safer and more accessible for all. We’ll also hold a live auction with exciting packages you’ll definitely want to get your hands on, and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact through the special appeal!

Join us as we thank these change-makers, celebrate our hard-won victories, and inspire others to join us with contagious enthusiasm. Proceeds of the Alice Awards will go towards funding our work to build a future where everyone can safely and easily get around walking, cycling, and taking public transit.

Cycle Oregon Classic 2018

Whether you’ve ridden Cycle Oregon’s Classic ride before, or this will be your first time, it will surely be a ride to remember. This package secures your spot on the 2018 Classic Ride in September 2018, months before registration opens! The route for the ride will be announced in January 2018.

You can’t truly know a state until you’ve explored several hundred miles of it on a bike. This is the founding principle that gave rise to Cycle Oregon 30 amazing years ago. Since that first ride, our bikes have gotten lighter, our camps have gotten bigger, and our following has grown. But the riders really haven’t changed all that much. Year in, year out, Cycle Oregon riders are always fun, energetic people who simply can’t think of a better way to spend a week than by pedalling their way through some of the most beautiful country on earth.

Thank you to Cycle Oregon!

Meet this year’s winners!

Dozens of incredible advocates were nominated for this year’s awards, and we’re deeply grateful for their work to make it safe, easy, and affordable for everyone in our region to get around on foot, bike, or via public transit. Let us introduce you to this year’s Alice Award winners!

Youth Environmental Justice Alliance

2017 Alice Award

The Youth Environmental Justice Alliance (YEJA), a project of OPAL, creates low-income youth and youth of color leaders through political education, campaign organizing, and skill-building to address issues of Environmental Justice. The leadership program creates a space for marginalized youth to take action on the issues that directly impact them and their community.

YEJA led the way to get youth transit passes, YouthPass to the Future, for students in East Portland. Free TriMet passes for youth help youth access school, jobs, community, and friends. Thanks to the work of YEJA, the youth pass has been expanded to David Douglass and Parkrose High schoolers. This is a big victory for this group of smart and passionate youth.

Shane MacRhodes

2017 Bud Clark Lifetime Achievement Award

Shane is a dedicated member of the For Every Kid Coalition and was integral in helping win $125 million for Safe Routes to School (SRTS) in the recently passed statewide transportation funding bill. Shane is a leader in the SRTS steering committee where he organized the 2016 Oregon SRTS Conference, which engaged legislative champion Representative John Lively. Shane’s advocacy also includes planning a town hall in Eugene, presenting to legislative committees, and testifying with his kids before the Joint Committee on Transportation Preservation and Modernization. Shane also helped build the foundation for a strong regional SRTS program in the Eugene-Springfield Metro area which included a strategic plan and funding.

Shane is dedicated to making streets safe for all in his region. He has started Kidical Mass in Eugene, a successful family ride that encourages families to take back the streets. He also leads yearly family camping rides for families in the area. Shane is a coach for the League of American Bicyclists, training League Cycling Instructors throughout the Northwest. He enjoys teaching new riders, kids, families, adults, and bike education instructors. When not riding with his kids to school or on big adventures, he’s continuing his work to make Eugene the best city for biking in Oregon!
