Meet the 2019 Alice Award Winners!

Emerging Leader Award: Maria Sipin

The Street Trust first met Maria Sipin when she volunteered as a photographer at the 2018 Active Transportation Summit. At the time, she was a student in Portland State University's Master of Urban Planning program. Now, Maria is a transportation planner at the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT).
Her job primarily focuses on active transportation, where she uses her platform to shape plans and investments to support the region’s racial justice movements.

In addition to her work at ODOT, Maria works for the community via several venues, and she participates in The Street Trust's Women Bike Program. She’s in her fifth year as a board member for the non-profit People for Mobility Justice based in Southern California and is a certified cycling trainer by the League of American Bicyclists. Maria is active in working for the community on transportation projects and activism supporting the needs and rights of low-income communities of color, teen health, and LGBTQ youth of color.

Alice Award Winner: Rukaiyah Adams

Rukaiyah Adams

When Rukaiyah Adams was invited to participate in a discussion of how to improve the area around the Moda Center, the conveners may not have known how pivotal her participation would be. They were well aware of her professional accomplishments: a career in investing and now Chief Investment Officer at Meyer Memorial Trust and Chair of the Oregon Investment Council. They may have known she earned both an MBA and a JD from Stanford.

Rukaiyah brought all that and more to the table--shining her light on how the creation of I-5, the Memorial Coliseum, and Emanuel Hospital impacted Portland’s black community. That history is now known by many more people and should be known by us all. Moreover, Rukaiyah has presented us with the opportunity to address that history with an intentional effort to remake the Rose Quarter called the Albina Vision. The Albina Vision represents how transportation decisions ought to be made--driven by non-negotiable values and audacious hope with transportation in support of people

Special performance: The Sprockettes

The Sprockettes

This all-female cycle troupe started some 15 years ago using bikes, dance, and stunts as a way to spread a message of body positivity, self-expression, and cycling advocacy. This cycling sensation has entertained throngs of supporters in the west and in doing so, creating “spin-offs” in other cities such as Chicago, San Francisco, and even Japan. The fun and laughter are now coming to an end with the final performance taking place on December 1, 2019. The Street Trust is honored to have the Sprockettes perform before officially rolling down that road to retirement.
