Meet our Bike Raffle’s Sponsor: Western Bikeworks

We are so excited to be partnering with Western Bikeworks for our 2018 Bike Raffle. Since 2011, Western Bikeworks has been a staple for cyclists in the Pearl neighborhood.

Western Bikeworks has an interesting origin story: it began in a humble Bay Area garage. Founders Lou Doctor and Jay Torborg were selling bike tires on eBay, when their business grew so much that tire manufacturers approached them to suggest they start their own company. In 2003, they heeded that advice, opened up a Portland warehouse, and set up a website. After eight years, they expanded to their present-day location on NW 17th & Lovejoy.

This community-focused bike shop welcomes cyclists from all walks of life. Doctor and Torborg see their role as more than just salespeople — their aim is to serve as educators. Getting into any facet of cycling can be intimidating, and one of Western’s goals is to break through this intimidation to make cycling accessible and judgment-free for all. Beginners, veteran roadies, commuters, kids, gravel grinders, mountain bike wannabes, and experienced trail riders are all welcome. In addition to being one of the friendliest shops a new rider can go to in Portland, Western Bikeworks has a team with years of expertise in repairing and upgrading parts.

Western Bikeworks’ support of Portland’s cycling community did not start with their generous donation of this year’s bike raffle. It regularly supports a lot of local races and rides through mechanical support and complementary nutrition for participants.
