Women Bike: August 2017 Recap

This August was a hot one, but we powered through!

Rides!

Street Trust Roll Model Jenny Glass hosted the Sunday Parkways ride for Women Bike this month. The route was in outer NE Portland and passed through the Hazelwood, Parkrose Heights, and Russell neighborhoods – a 6.4 mile loop that brought riders through Knott, Thompson, East Holladay, and Hazelwood Hydro Parks. Sunday Parkways are always fun, easy rides suitable for all age groups. During our leisurely roll, we passed through refreshing misters, besieged a bouncy castle, watched dancing in the park, hit up the food trucks, scored some free foam helmet decor, and attempted to ride while holding a very sizable ice cream cone (success!)

We sent the hottest of summer months off in style by joining forces with the Thursday Night Ride (TNR) and riding through the city streets as one massive group of music-pumping, costume-wearing, lit-up cyclists. We made a pit stop along the way to load up on commodities, then hung out in one of Portland’s characteristic long alleyways while being serenaded by some resident musicians. The ride ended at a cool spot along the river, where we spent the night socializing and hanging out around the beach fire. TNR happens every Thursday night, rain or shine, and is all about promoting good old-fashioned bike fun.

Social Meetups

We took a moment out of our commutes to work to enjoy some top-notch espresso at Ristretto Roasters for our monthly coffee meet up. Being right on North Williams, the café is super bike-friendly, with ample racks nearby and the perfect covered street-side patio to sip on coffee and wave to your friends pedaling past. We swapped tips on how to get your bike up on a storage hook with finesse (it involves using your knee) and discussed the perfect backpack/pannier bag. Shout-out to local bicycle bag maker North St. Bags! This month’s happy hour meet-up was at the Tin Bucket, also conveniently located on North Williams.

We’re recruiting Women Bike Roll Models!

Do you love biking? Are there women in your community of friends, coworkers, and neighbors interested in biking? Become a Street Trust Roll Model, and help spread your love of biking to your community! We are looking for women who enjoy biking to be a part of this year’s mentor program.
