Summer Bike Camp Fun!

The Street Trust has teamed up with ROSE CDC once again this year to facilitate a youth bike camp for its residents in outer Southeast Portland. This bike camp was made possible through our Access to Bicycling Initiative and Metro.

The group this year was our largest ever, with 19 campers participating throughout the 4-day program.  We were also a very culturally diverse team, with kids from Romanian, Somali, Mexican, African American and Caucasian American backgrounds. Ages ranged from 8 years old to 13 years old, with several campers participating for the third year in a row. “The kids got along with each other really well and were a blast to around the entire week”, said group leader William Francis.

Each day youth met as a group, beginning with an ice-breaker activity and completing a basic bike safety check. On the first day we covered some bike safety essentials such as proper braking, riding in a single-file line, using hand signals, and understanding the gearing on the bikes. Destinations included the top of Mount Tabor Park, the new Gateway Green site, and a little downtown riding as well. We spent the majority of our our time on the 205 bike path, the Springwater Corridor path, and neighborhood streets in East Portland.

Many, if not all destinations were brand new experiences for the campers, with the dirt tracks at Gateway Green being the week’s highlight for most campers. One aspect of the routing worth noting is that all destinations are within a realistic and safe reach for the campers. To beat the heat we stopped for ice-cream and rode through some water fountains at several Portland parks. We finished the week with a pizza lunch downtown and awarded the kids with certificates that highlighted the amazing distances they had covered over the 4-day camp, a total of more than 40 miles!

A special thanks goes out to our partners and fellow camp instructors at ROSE CDC, Luke Bonham, Jami LeBaron and Samantha Shandy for aiding in the safe, active and positive participation of the campers from Firland, BellRose and Leander Court locations.

We’d also like to recognize the participation of three summer interns at The Street Trust, Mando Smoak, Andrew Provost and John Keithly. Thanks everyone for an amazing week with the kids and we’re already looking forward to next year!
