Women Bike January Recap

January was all about our New Year’s resolutions, and we held a Women Bike ride in Portland to get the year started right. During the ride, women shared their 2017 goals and met other fun gals. One common goal women expressed was staying healthy throughout the year and using bikes as a tool to keep on track. Other women had big plans for riding long distance and looking for ride opportunities to train throughout the year.

Additionally, in January, we led two social meet ups: one at Floyds’s Coffee and the other at Hopworks Bikebar in North Portland. We learned about bike polo–from women who participate–and they shared some tips for making it a fun sport. Even though January brought winter storms, with a mix of ice and snow, women were really excited to be out riding again. Overall, January was great, and we met several new women!

This Month’s Highlight

Women Bike Intern, Karla Ibarra

This month, we welcomed Karla Ibarra, The Street Trust’s new Women Bike intern. Karla is a newbie to the bike world. As a beginner bicyclist, she became interested in Women Bike to learn more about biking and utilizing bikes to achieve her personal goals.

Karla is a great advocate for helping other people, and her enthusiasm to join the Women Bike program was huge. One of the most exciting things about working with Women Bike is working with amazing people who encourage women to achieve their personal goals through biking. She is also excited to work with a nonprofit organization that helps promote the improvement of walking, biking, and public transit conditions in Oregon.

Karla has experience in assisting with projects from her previous work. She will bring her passion to help others and her dedication to get things done. She will also bring her wonderful bilingual skills to communicate with her fellow Spanish speaking Women Bike riders.

Karla is excited to help other people and become an avid woman biker herself!
