November Women Bike Recap

Fall finally beat out the summer heat last month, and chilly temperatures settled in through November. But a little cold didn’t get in the way of all of our fun Women Bike events!

Last month we partnered with Gladys Bikes for their monthly Bike Maintenance class, where participants learned how to properly clean their bikes, lube their chains, and change a tire. Gladys Bikes’ mechanics, Jim and Amanda, did an awesome job walking us through the anatomy of a bike, which bike parts to clean most often, and products and techniques for cleaning. Big thanks to the Gladys team for hosting this awesome workshop!

In November we were excited to kick off our monthly Happy Hour event to expand social opportunities beyond our bi-monthly Coffee Clubs. Eight awesome gals joined us at Base Camp Brewing in Southeast Portland. A chilly night was made cozy with S’more Stouts (complete with a roasted marshmallow garnish) as we chatted about bikes and life. It was great to meet Janice, who brought two of her new-to-city-biking roommates. We also met Cecilia, a recent transplant from Spain via Chicago, who loves riding her bike around Portland for errands and fun. She is excited to be a part of Women Bike and meet other women to bike with in her free time.

The Saturday before Thanksgiving, we got in the giving spirit and jumped in the saddle for Cranksgiving. Put on by PuddleCycle, a winter recreational riding group, “Cranksgiving is a treasure-hunt food drive – teams visit a list of stores and buy a list of items. Items are donated to Outside In, which serves homeless youth.” Our team, the Lady Gobblers, was small but mighty and contributed to the overall event total of $1,053.04 worth of food donations to Outside In. We had an excellent time riding all over the city, from VeloCult up to the Alberta Arts District, then down to the Pearl and then across downtown to a few stops in Southeast. Best of all, the route provided an on-bike learning opportunity: Chris, Lora and Dana all learned how to access Morrison Bridge by bike! This is certainly one of the more confusing crossings, but now these gals can navigate it like pros.

We have an exciting calendar coming up in December and we hope to see you at an event soon.
