BTA Announces New Women’s Initiative

At last night’s Annual Member Meeting, we made a big announcement to our members: we are launching a women’s initiative called Women Bike, focused on getting more women in our region using bicycles to meet their transportation, health and personal goals and needs.

Visual at Annual Member Meeting: Only 1 female rider for every 2 male riders.

Nicole Davenport, formerly BTA’s Membership Manager, has taken on a new role at BTA as the Women Bike and Bike Commute Challenge Program Manager. Nicole led the anniversary ride from the NW Park Blocks to VeloCult, where balloons, cake, and 90’s jams created a buzz of excitement to celebrate BTA’s 25th birthday with it’s members. But turning 25 wasn’t the only thing members had to get excited about. After ensuring everyone had their share of cake, Nicole took the stage to announce BTA’s Women Bike program.

In Portland men are twice as likely as women to ride bikes. While Portland is rising above the national average where only one in every four riders is female, it is clear that women across the nation and in our region face unique barriers to bicycling. BTA is committed to helping women overcome those barriers in our region.

Women BikeThe heart of the initiative will be a Facebook group where women, female-identifying, trans, and gender nonconforming individuals can post questions, stories, and resources about women’s issues and bicycling. The Facebook group will also serve as a place for women to connect, to start building community, both on and offline. The program will also host weekly Coffee Clubs along with monthly educational, networking and just plain fun events and rides to help women connect with each other while also experience the joy of riding a bike.

Who is the group for?
This group is for all women, female identifying, trans, and gender non-conforming individuals who have an interest in bicycling, or think that they might.

Do I need to be an experienced rider to join?
No. The purpose of this group and our events is to increase access to bicycling. Persons interested in bicycling, regardless of skill level, are encouraged to join. We hope the group will have a variety of riders, and will be a place for more experienced riders to share with new riders.

How do I get involved?
Join the Facebook Group* and come to an upcoming event!
