Live the Revolution Speaker Preview: Joseph Ahearne

This week Jude Gerace of Sugar Wheel Works got a chance to catch up with old friend and 2013 Live the Revolution storyteller Joseph Ahearne. To whet your appetite for this year’s event we thought we’d give you a little sneak peak and get to know Joseph a little better.

Jude: When did you start riding a bike?

Joseph: I got my first bike when I was about 4 or 5. I had to stand on a chair to get on it, and measured my progress by the number of sidewalk seams I could get past before crashing. There was probably a parent around sometimes, but I was smart enough not to wait for them. I’d drag a dining room chair out onto the sidewalk, jump on and ride.

Why do you enjoy riding a bike?JosephAhearne for blog

Because it makes me feel alive while it’s taking me somewhere. Unlike driving a car, which makes me feel angry and hopeless.

If there was one piece of advice you could give your 10 year old self what would it be?

Quit school as soon as possible and start really learning something.

If you could ride your bike anywhere, where would you ride?

Someday I’m going to ride the Camino de Santiago. I’ll start maybe in Paris, head to Brittany, down through the Pyrenees, across northern Spain, down through Portugal, cross at Gibraltar into Morocco, find out what northern Africa is all about, go back to Spain, on around the southern part to the Mediterranean, go swimming, hang out and drink sangria, eat tapas, etc. Something like that.

Your favorite vise?  (not wilton, craftsman or delta…but more like bourban, beer, or chocolate)

Wilton. I’m a fan of hard cider. I probably eat too much popcorn.

Worst bike ride?

Through a really hellish storm somewhere in nowhere Idaho. [There was a] head wind at about 40mph. I pedaled about 4 – 5 hours and made 12 miles. And got 3 flats. Not my day.

Best bike ride?

In Italy, from Padova to Venice along the Brenta river, winding past big old villas. Pizza and vino and a lot of history at the end of the ride.

Favorite person with whom to ride?

Whomever I’m with.
