ACTION ALERT: Testify at Portland City Hall, Oct 9th, 1:30pm

Update 2013-10-08: Thanks to the voices of hundreds of community members like you, Portland City Commissioner Steve Novick announced his intent to conduct a study and ensure that the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) has the time and resources it needs to find the right solution.

You can read our response to his comments, and we have the latest on plans for the City Council meeting on October 9th. Below is the action alert originally sent on October 4th.

We have a simple request for Portland City Council: work with the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) and Metro to study the effects of proposed safety improvements on SW Barbur. Our request is being heard loud and clear thanks to hundreds of BTA members and supporters, like you, who are contacting Portland City Council. Thank you.

Unfortunately, the City of Portland is not planning to study safety of SW Barbur when they adopt the SW Corridor Plan on October 9th.

If ODOT is going to make safety improvements on SW Barbur, they need to know it’s a local priority. If Portland City Council won’t speak up for safety, it’s time for us to speak up for ourselves.

Everyone who wants safety on SW Barbur should join us at City Hall on October 9th at 1:30PM to testify in support of safe streets. The resolution will be heard promptly at two o’clock, which is why we will gather a half hour early to sign up to speak.

The message is simple. We will be asking Portland City Council to put safety first and amend the SW Corridor Plan resolution to include the following:

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, the Council directs staff to initiate a transparent and collaborative process with Metro and ODOT to study the Barbur lane diet option on SW Barbur Blvd. from Terwilliger to Hamilton. (SW Corridor Plan Projects #5006 & #1019)

    I urge my colleagues on the city council to explore options for Barbur Blvd that would include safety options for cyclists and pedestrians. Even if you don’t agree with the road diet option, there could be other alternatives to the current plan which could include bike/ped safety improvements. Thanks, Randy

    I ride SW Barber four times a week during rush hour as a part of my regular bike commute and cargo bike delivery route. There is no other reasonable connector between downtown and the outer reaches of SW Portland and beyond. For the most part the bike lanes are excellent, and the Northbound bypass of the SW Capitol Hwy ramp makes the route much safer than it would otherwise be. There are two bridges that are glaring exceptions to the otherwise excellent bike lanes, bridges that force bikes out into traffic. While I have not personally had a problem, I can see that these two sections, both North and South bound, are discouraging to riders and pose significant safety risk due to the extreme difference in traveling speed between truck and auto traffic and bike traffic. Like all riders I have definitely experienced cars and trucks which are not willing to give sufficient space, or wait to pass. I would personally feel much more comfortable with a continuous bike lane, and such a bike lane would make it clearer to traffic that bicycles are a viable alternative to driving the route, potentially reducing traffic.

    This is a topic that should definitely be studied immediately. As traffic increases this will only become more of a problem in the future.
