Bike Commute Workshops: Friday at the Library, and Now Available Online

This summer, the Bicycle Transportation Alliance has been busy giving Bike Commute Workshops all across the Portland region. These workshops help educate new bike commuters about the rules of the road, provide tips and tricks for an enjoyable ride, and help employees successfully organize their office’s Bike Commute Challenge team. Staff from the BTA have given Bike Commute Workshop presentations to law firms, government offices, software companies, community groups, publishers, apparel designers, environmental advocacy organizations, shoe companies, and everything in between; since August 1st, over 500 people have taken part in our 1-hour brown bag lunch events and learned everything they need to strike out on the road and start logging miles for the Bike Commute Challenge. Perhaps the most exciting fact about these presentations: since the end of July, slightly more than 50% of the 500+ attendees of the Bike Commute Workshops have been women.

There will be a Bike Commute Workshop that is open to the public and free to attend tomorrow, Friday September 13 at Noon at the Portland Central Library in Downtown Portland. The presentation, brought to you by the BTA and the Multnomah County Library, is a great primer for learning the basic rules of the road and enjoying your bike commute; the presentation’s content is designed for novice and experienced bike riders alike. The presentation will be held in the US Bank Room of the Central Library, located at 801 SW 10th Avenue. The Library is accessible via the Central Library station on the CL/NS Portland Streetcar lines and the Library/SW 9th Blue and Red Line MAX station. To find out more about the event, check out the Multnomah County Library’s Event webpage.

If you’re unable to sneak away on your lunch hour, never fear! The BTA recently presented a Bike Commute Workshop at Elemental Technologies, a media software company based in Southwest Portland that specializes in video processing. Elemental was nice enough to produce a video of the Bike Commute Workshop last month; check out the 50-minute video below to learn more about how to prepare for your bike commute and how to best lead your Bike Commute Challenge team to victory. Judging by Elemental’s impressive Bike Commute Challenge stats, it looks like the presentation paid off; led by their fearless captain Steve Swanson,  Elemental Technologies’ Bike Commute Challenge Team currently boasts an impressive 24% commute rate.

Hope to see you at the Central Library on Friday! If you’re interested in having your business, building or organization host the Bicycle Transportation Alliance for a lunchtime Bike Commute Workshop, send us a message; we’d be happy to arrange a presentation.

Happy riding!

That *is* an exciting fact 😉 (No, really.)
